Bald ist es geschafft / soon we are there

Die letzte Nacht auf See beginnt bald. Wir haben noch 90 SM bis zur Nordwestküste von Barbados. Das sollten wir bis morgen geschafft haben. Das Wetter ist moderate mit angenehmen Winden aus Nordost. Heute haben wir noch ein wenig am Schiff gearbeitet, ein Schloss in der Salontür musste noch eingebaut werden. Als das geschehen war rief Elke, es kommt schon wieder kein Wasser. Also in den Motorraum und nachschauen. Ein Stromkabel war korrodiert, so dass die Pumpe keinen Strom mehr bekam. Das habe ich gerichtet. Zur selben Zeit, bis an der Angel. Eine Dorade wollte unseren Speiseplan verbessern. Den haben wir dann auch noch an Bord gebracht, sofort geschlachtet und eingefroren. Elke hatte schon Fleisch aus den Freezer geholt. Wir sind sehr gespannt wer von uns das Land als erster sieht.

The last night on the sea will begin soon. We have only 90 SM left to the north west coast of Barbados. The weather is moderate with wind from the north east. Today we have done some small jobs on the boat. A new lock has to be installed to the salon door. After finished this, Elke was shouting again no water in the kitchen. I dived in the motor room and discovered a corroded cable and the pump has no electricity. The cable was newly set as Elke shouted again, fish a fish has strike on the fishing rod. AS Dorade was enriching the menu at LA Paloma. I prepared the fish and Elke made it ready for the freezer. For lunch the fish was to late, meat was already unfrozen. We will see who will be first to see the land this night.

Ein paar Neuigkeiten / a few news from the tour

Die letzten Tage war Karibik feeling nicht wirklich unser Ding. Das schwere Tief oben im Atlantik haut hier alles durcheinander. Wir haben volle Bewölkung, mehrere Regenschauer. Diese Sqaulls kommen so angerauscht und bringen manchmal viel Wind mit. Einer dieser Squalls hat uns dann den Besan umgeschlagen, so dass wir einen Riss an einer Naht quer durch das Segel bekamen. Also runter mit dem Basan. Der Wind war so konfus, dass wir gar nicht wussten wie wir ihn aussegeln sollten. Zum Glück sind solche Squalls nur von kurzer Dauer. Wir haben den Besan dann in 2 1/2 Stunden wieder zusammen genäht. Jetzt steht er wieder und macht seine Arbeit. Gestern sind wir ein 8 Stunden unter Motor gefahren, da der Wind sehr schwach war. Danach konnten wir die ganze Nacht wieder mit der alten Besegelung Besan, Genua segeln. Das hat uns dann über die Nacht 90 SM weiter in Richtung Barbados gebracht. Heute ist die Bewölkung etwas aufgelockert und der Wind treibt uns mit 5 Knoten weiter nach Südwesten.

The last days the carib feeling was not on the agenda. The heavy depression far north in the Atlantic shuffled the whole system. We have heavy clouds and sever<al rain showers during the day and night. The Squalls are coming rapidly through and have most of the time some additional wind in the package from various directions. One of this squalls shifted our mizzen sail forcefully to the other side and destroyed part of the sail. Mizzen down. The wind became realy confused and we had difficulties to keep the boat on track. Luckily these squalls are from short durations. We have knitted the sail in 2 1/2 work together again and now he is doing his job. Yesterday we run 8 hours with the engine, the wind was very light and not from the right direction. Later we hoist the sails and we could sail over the night 90 SM to west in direction of Barbados. Today the clouds are not so dense and the wind is bringing us with 5 knots further to the west.

Nicht der perfekte Tag / not the perfect day

Heute ist nicht der perfekte Tag für uns. Nach dem Aufstehen wollte Oliver sich waschen, es kommt kein Wasser lässt er laut vernehmen. Klare Sache Pumpe ausgeschaltet. Schalter ein und es tut sich nichts, die Sicherung fliegt raus. Schlussfolgerung, die Pumpe ist defekt. Ohje, der Skipper muss in den Motorraum und nachschauen und das noch vor dem Frühstück. Zum Glück haben wir eine Hauswasserpumpe in reserve. Die wurde auch schnell eingebaut und voila, Wasser marsch. Jetzt erst einmal Frühstücken. Auch kommt der Wind nicht aus der richtigen Richtung, wir müssen zu weit nach Nordwesten segeln, das bringt und nicht weit genug nach Süden. Die Sonne ist auch nur Zeitweise zu besuch, immer kommen Wolken und kurze Regenschauer. Wir haben dann den Kurs nach Südwesten auf 240 Grad gewechselt um weiter nach Süden zu kommen. Bei einer verflixten Welle fällt die Dose mit dem Mehl für das Brot im hohen Bogen vom Tisch. Elke flucht lauthals über den Mist. Staubsauger raus und den mist wegsaugen. Die defekte Wasserpumpe haben Oliver und ich zerlegt und den Fehler auch gefunden. Ein Magnet im Gehäuse hatte sich gelöst. Es war nur angeklebt, was primitiv. Wir haben die Pumpe gereinigt, den Magneten mit Araldit wieder an seinen Platz geklebt. Das muss jetzt erst einmal bis Morgen trocknen, dann bauen wir die Pumpe wieder zusammen und testen sie ausgiebig. Dann haben wir wieder einen Ersatz. Der Tag ist noch nicht zu Ende, aber uns reicht es fürs Erste, ist doch nicht Freitag der 13te.

Today< is not the perfect day for us. After getting up in the morning Oliver want to make his morning cleaning, No water he shout from the fore cabin. No problem, the switch is off. Switch on, but still no water, instead the fuse trip. The pump seems to be defect. Sorry for the skipper, he has to climb in the narrow engine room. This before even breakfast was served. Luckily we have a spare pump in our stock. The pump has been changed quickly and voila water running. Now breakfast, the skipper was happy. The wind today is also not in our favor, the direction will shift us to much to the north west. The sun is also not very often looking through the clouds and rain short showers are poring down the sky. We changed the course to 240° to get more to the south. One high wave was tilting the boat down to stare board and the flour pot fell from the table and flour all over in the salon. Elke was shouting bad words through the boat. Vacuum cleaner out and cleaning up the mess. We dismantled the mal functioning water pump and find the problem. One of the magnet in the housing was loose. Originally glued in place. We cleaned up the pump and repositioned the magnet in the housing with ARALDIT epoxy. This has to cure now until tomorrow and we will assembly the pump again. The test will shoe us if the pump will function again. If so, then we will have a spare pump in stock. The day is not yet over, but is is enough for one day. Today is not Friday the 13.

Bergfest / 0ver the hill

Heute haben wir Bergfest, die letzten 1000 SM sind abzusegeln. Im Schnitt machen wir zirka 130 SM pro 24 Stunden. Der Passat weht relativ konstant aus Nordost bis Ost mit 18 Knoten. Wir brauchen also noch ungefähr 8 Tage bis zum Ziel nach Barbados. ETA wird wohl der 30. Januar sein. Da fängt der Karneval auf Barbados an. Das ist sicher auch so ein Ausnahmezustand wir bei uns im Rheinland.

Was uns ein wenig zu schaffen macht ist das ständige Rollen und der fehlende Schlaf. Elke hat damit besonders Probleme. Wir haben also heute beschlossen, dass Elke nicht mehr zur Wache eingeteilt wird, damit sie mehr Schlaf bekommt. Oliver und Ferdinand werden sich um die Nachtwache kümmern und diese unter sich aufteilen. Dann sollte Elke mehr Ruhezeiten bekommen. In der letzten Nacht waren zwei Wale ganz dicht beim Boot, haben sich aber nicht weiter um uns gekümmert, sondern sind unter uns weggetaucht. Den ersten Squall (schwere Regenwolken mit extra Wind darin) hatten wir in der Nacht und den zweiten mit einem guten Schauer am Vormittag. Diese Squalls kann man des Nachts auf dem Radar erkennen und Vorkehrungen treffen um eventuell die Segel einzurollen. Heute steht Schweinebraten mit Gemüse auf der Speisekarte.

Today we are over the hill. The destination Barbados is only 1000 SM's away. In the averages we are doing 130 SM in 24 hours. The trade wind is relatively constant from north east or east. We do need another 8 days to reach Barbados. ETA will be the 30. January. This should be also the beginning of the carnival season in the Caribbean. There will be lots of fun waiting for us.

We have some problems with the rolling of the boat and the missing of sleep. We have decided today that Elke no longer be active taking watch during the night to get more sleep. Oliver and Ferdinand will take on the responsibility to organize the night watch. Elke will have more time to relax during the night. Last night we had two wales very closed to the boat. They do not seems to be interested in us, they dive under us and followed their way. The first squall we receive in the night. Squalls are heavy clouds full of rain and wind. This will last a few minutes and then all is normal. The second squall we receive during the morning. In this squall there was more rain in it. The boat was cleaned with sweet water the first time since we left the Cap Verde. During the night we could see the squall on the radar. This will give us the time to take the sail in in case the wind will increase. Today the cook will serve pork meat to lunch.

Der Atlantik ist kein Ententeich / The Atlantic is not a duck pool

Der Atlantik ist kein Ententeich. Das mussten wir am 20.01. erfahren. Wir hatten Winde aus Nordost von 20 Knoten, in den Böen 25 Knoten. Da hatte sich ein ungünstige Dünung aufgebaut. In Perioden kam dann eine ca. 3 Meter Hohe Welle angerauscht, die uns dann stark versetzte und das Schiff aufschaukelte. Wir machten aber gut strecke. Es war nur sehr unkomfortabel. Elke hat gemeckert. An Schlafen war bei dem gerumpel und gegurgel nicht zu denken. Entsprechen war die Laune der Crew nicht die Beste. Wir konnten aber eine Strecke von 147 SM als Etmal für 24 Stunden eintragen. Das Wetter hat sich beruhigt, seit gestern scheint die Sonne. Wir konnten Angeln und haben 2 ordentliche Doraden angelanded. Wir haben über den Tag noch 2 neue Schlösser in die Tür zur Heckkabiene eingebaut, sollen ja viele Langfinger in der Karibik ihr Unwesen treiben. Elke hat ihren Schlafplatz in der letzten Nacht in den Salon verlegt, weniger Geräusche und weniger Bewegungen als Achtern. Jetzt geht es wetter bedingt etwas ruhiger zu, wir kommen aber immer noch gut vorwärz. Wir liegen noch im Zeitplan die Strecke von den Kapverden nach Barbados in 16 Tagen zu schaffen.

The Atlantic is not a duck pool. This we know since 20.01. We had Wind from north east of 20 knots and in the peak 25 knots. The waves where high and not comfortable. Periodically a 3 meter wave cam from behind and pushed the boat out of its way and the boat was bouncing around a lot. Elke was not amused. To sleep under this conditions was basically not possible with the sound of the boat, wind and sea. The spirit of the crew was not so good after this night. We could log a distance of 147 SM in 245 hours. The weather now has eased up and since yesterday the sun is shining. We had luck withz the fishing and could land 2 respectable Dorade on Bord. We alsdo have installed 2 more locks in the door of the after cabin, there are many long fingers in the Carib. Elkje has changed her sleeping place from the after cabin to the salon, ist less noise and lesser movement there. Now agfter the weather changed to better we make good way to Barbados. We are a still in our calculated range to make it to Barbados in 16 days.

Weiter Richtung Barbados / further in direction Barbados

Nach der Leichtwindperiode haben wir seit Gestern Nacht bessere Wind aus Nordost. Heute waren es 5 BF und das hat uns einen guten Schritt weiter gebracht. La Paloma ist mit 7 Knoten in Richtung Barbados unterwegs. Das macht dem Skipper und der Crew Spas. Die günstigen Winde sollen wohl noch weiter anhalten. Nur die Sonne will nicht so richtig durchkommen. Das ist nicht gut für unseren Stromhaushalt. Gestern mussten wir für eine Stunde den Motor starten um die Batterien zu laden. Jetzt fehlt uns der Generator, der leider noch immer defekt ist. Aber so lange wir um die 6 Knoten segeln bringt der Wellengenerator genügend Strom.

After the light wind conditions we receive since yesterday night good wind from the north east. Today we had BF 5 and this had brought us a good distance forward to Barbados. La Paloma was running with 7 knots in the right direction. This makes the Skipper and the crew happy. The favorable wind should hold on for some time. Only the sun do not like to come out, heavy clouds overcast the sky. Thisa is not good for our electric charging system. Yesterday we had to start the engine for one hour to boost the batteries. Now we are missing our generator, he is still not operating. As long we are sailing 6 knots trhe shaft generator is giving us sufficient electricity

Eine neuer Tag / a new day

In der letzten Nacht sind wir gut voran gekommen. Im Schnitt segelten wir um die 6 Knoten pro Stunde. Heute morgen wurde der Wind wieder launisch und lies in der Stärke nach. Trotz alle dem werden wir ca. 120 SM in 24 Stunden zurückgelegt haben. Die Sonne hat sich leider nicht sehen lassen, der Himmel ist bewölkt. Wir mussten einen mehr westlichen Kurs segeln was uns 5 SM von unserer Kurslinie versetzte. Der Wind hat vor einiger Zeit etwas AUF Südosten gedreht. Den Kurs haben wir dementsprechend geändert. Aber der Wind ist schwach und wir kommen nur langsam voran. Was soll's wir müssen halt auf besseren Wind warten. Laut den Wetterfrösche soll es ja morgen anständig aus Nordosten blasen. Schauen wir mal. Elke macht gerade das Mittagessen fertig, es gibt selbst gefangene Dorade mit Reis und Gurkensalat.

Last night we made good way to our destination. In average we sailed 6 knots per hour. Today morning the wind again became a bit difficult and eased up. Nevertheless we made 120 SM in the last 24 hours. The sun was almost not visible today, lots of clouds on the sky. We had to sail a bit more to the west and for that reason we where 5 SM off from our right line to Barbados. The wind is light and we are slow now. What is the matter, we have to wait for better wind. Tomorrow according to our weather frogs we should get lots of wind from north east. Wait and see. Elke is preparing the lunch for today. Frech Dorade with rice and cucumber salad.
