Bald ist es geschafft / soon we are there

Die letzte Nacht auf See beginnt bald. Wir haben noch 90 SM bis zur Nordwestküste von Barbados. Das sollten wir bis morgen geschafft haben. Das Wetter ist moderate mit angenehmen Winden aus Nordost. Heute haben wir noch ein wenig am Schiff gearbeitet, ein Schloss in der Salontür musste noch eingebaut werden. Als das geschehen war rief Elke, es kommt schon wieder kein Wasser. Also in den Motorraum und nachschauen. Ein Stromkabel war korrodiert, so dass die Pumpe keinen Strom mehr bekam. Das habe ich gerichtet. Zur selben Zeit, bis an der Angel. Eine Dorade wollte unseren Speiseplan verbessern. Den haben wir dann auch noch an Bord gebracht, sofort geschlachtet und eingefroren. Elke hatte schon Fleisch aus den Freezer geholt. Wir sind sehr gespannt wer von uns das Land als erster sieht.

The last night on the sea will begin soon. We have only 90 SM left to the north west coast of Barbados. The weather is moderate with wind from the north east. Today we have done some small jobs on the boat. A new lock has to be installed to the salon door. After finished this, Elke was shouting again no water in the kitchen. I dived in the motor room and discovered a corroded cable and the pump has no electricity. The cable was newly set as Elke shouted again, fish a fish has strike on the fishing rod. AS Dorade was enriching the menu at LA Paloma. I prepared the fish and Elke made it ready for the freezer. For lunch the fish was to late, meat was already unfrozen. We will see who will be first to see the land this night.

Ein paar Neuigkeiten / a few news from the tour

Die letzten Tage war Karibik feeling nicht wirklich unser Ding. Das schwere Tief oben im Atlantik haut hier alles durcheinander. Wir haben volle Bewölkung, mehrere Regenschauer. Diese Sqaulls kommen so angerauscht und bringen manchmal viel Wind mit. Einer dieser Squalls hat uns dann den Besan umgeschlagen, so dass wir einen Riss an einer Naht quer durch das Segel bekamen. Also runter mit dem Basan. Der Wind war so konfus, dass wir gar nicht wussten wie wir ihn aussegeln sollten. Zum Glück sind solche Squalls nur von kurzer Dauer. Wir haben den Besan dann in 2 1/2 Stunden wieder zusammen genäht. Jetzt steht er wieder und macht seine Arbeit. Gestern sind wir ein 8 Stunden unter Motor gefahren, da der Wind sehr schwach war. Danach konnten wir die ganze Nacht wieder mit der alten Besegelung Besan, Genua segeln. Das hat uns dann über die Nacht 90 SM weiter in Richtung Barbados gebracht. Heute ist die Bewölkung etwas aufgelockert und der Wind treibt uns mit 5 Knoten weiter nach Südwesten.

The last days the carib feeling was not on the agenda. The heavy depression far north in the Atlantic shuffled the whole system. We have heavy clouds and sever<al rain showers during the day and night. The Squalls are coming rapidly through and have most of the time some additional wind in the package from various directions. One of this squalls shifted our mizzen sail forcefully to the other side and destroyed part of the sail. Mizzen down. The wind became realy confused and we had difficulties to keep the boat on track. Luckily these squalls are from short durations. We have knitted the sail in 2 1/2 work together again and now he is doing his job. Yesterday we run 8 hours with the engine, the wind was very light and not from the right direction. Later we hoist the sails and we could sail over the night 90 SM to west in direction of Barbados. Today the clouds are not so dense and the wind is bringing us with 5 knots further to the west.

Nicht der perfekte Tag / not the perfect day

Heute ist nicht der perfekte Tag für uns. Nach dem Aufstehen wollte Oliver sich waschen, es kommt kein Wasser lässt er laut vernehmen. Klare Sache Pumpe ausgeschaltet. Schalter ein und es tut sich nichts, die Sicherung fliegt raus. Schlussfolgerung, die Pumpe ist defekt. Ohje, der Skipper muss in den Motorraum und nachschauen und das noch vor dem Frühstück. Zum Glück haben wir eine Hauswasserpumpe in reserve. Die wurde auch schnell eingebaut und voila, Wasser marsch. Jetzt erst einmal Frühstücken. Auch kommt der Wind nicht aus der richtigen Richtung, wir müssen zu weit nach Nordwesten segeln, das bringt und nicht weit genug nach Süden. Die Sonne ist auch nur Zeitweise zu besuch, immer kommen Wolken und kurze Regenschauer. Wir haben dann den Kurs nach Südwesten auf 240 Grad gewechselt um weiter nach Süden zu kommen. Bei einer verflixten Welle fällt die Dose mit dem Mehl für das Brot im hohen Bogen vom Tisch. Elke flucht lauthals über den Mist. Staubsauger raus und den mist wegsaugen. Die defekte Wasserpumpe haben Oliver und ich zerlegt und den Fehler auch gefunden. Ein Magnet im Gehäuse hatte sich gelöst. Es war nur angeklebt, was primitiv. Wir haben die Pumpe gereinigt, den Magneten mit Araldit wieder an seinen Platz geklebt. Das muss jetzt erst einmal bis Morgen trocknen, dann bauen wir die Pumpe wieder zusammen und testen sie ausgiebig. Dann haben wir wieder einen Ersatz. Der Tag ist noch nicht zu Ende, aber uns reicht es fürs Erste, ist doch nicht Freitag der 13te.

Today< is not the perfect day for us. After getting up in the morning Oliver want to make his morning cleaning, No water he shout from the fore cabin. No problem, the switch is off. Switch on, but still no water, instead the fuse trip. The pump seems to be defect. Sorry for the skipper, he has to climb in the narrow engine room. This before even breakfast was served. Luckily we have a spare pump in our stock. The pump has been changed quickly and voila water running. Now breakfast, the skipper was happy. The wind today is also not in our favor, the direction will shift us to much to the north west. The sun is also not very often looking through the clouds and rain short showers are poring down the sky. We changed the course to 240° to get more to the south. One high wave was tilting the boat down to stare board and the flour pot fell from the table and flour all over in the salon. Elke was shouting bad words through the boat. Vacuum cleaner out and cleaning up the mess. We dismantled the mal functioning water pump and find the problem. One of the magnet in the housing was loose. Originally glued in place. We cleaned up the pump and repositioned the magnet in the housing with ARALDIT epoxy. This has to cure now until tomorrow and we will assembly the pump again. The test will shoe us if the pump will function again. If so, then we will have a spare pump in stock. The day is not yet over, but is is enough for one day. Today is not Friday the 13.

Bergfest / 0ver the hill

Heute haben wir Bergfest, die letzten 1000 SM sind abzusegeln. Im Schnitt machen wir zirka 130 SM pro 24 Stunden. Der Passat weht relativ konstant aus Nordost bis Ost mit 18 Knoten. Wir brauchen also noch ungefähr 8 Tage bis zum Ziel nach Barbados. ETA wird wohl der 30. Januar sein. Da fängt der Karneval auf Barbados an. Das ist sicher auch so ein Ausnahmezustand wir bei uns im Rheinland.

Was uns ein wenig zu schaffen macht ist das ständige Rollen und der fehlende Schlaf. Elke hat damit besonders Probleme. Wir haben also heute beschlossen, dass Elke nicht mehr zur Wache eingeteilt wird, damit sie mehr Schlaf bekommt. Oliver und Ferdinand werden sich um die Nachtwache kümmern und diese unter sich aufteilen. Dann sollte Elke mehr Ruhezeiten bekommen. In der letzten Nacht waren zwei Wale ganz dicht beim Boot, haben sich aber nicht weiter um uns gekümmert, sondern sind unter uns weggetaucht. Den ersten Squall (schwere Regenwolken mit extra Wind darin) hatten wir in der Nacht und den zweiten mit einem guten Schauer am Vormittag. Diese Squalls kann man des Nachts auf dem Radar erkennen und Vorkehrungen treffen um eventuell die Segel einzurollen. Heute steht Schweinebraten mit Gemüse auf der Speisekarte.

Today we are over the hill. The destination Barbados is only 1000 SM's away. In the averages we are doing 130 SM in 24 hours. The trade wind is relatively constant from north east or east. We do need another 8 days to reach Barbados. ETA will be the 30. January. This should be also the beginning of the carnival season in the Caribbean. There will be lots of fun waiting for us.

We have some problems with the rolling of the boat and the missing of sleep. We have decided today that Elke no longer be active taking watch during the night to get more sleep. Oliver and Ferdinand will take on the responsibility to organize the night watch. Elke will have more time to relax during the night. Last night we had two wales very closed to the boat. They do not seems to be interested in us, they dive under us and followed their way. The first squall we receive in the night. Squalls are heavy clouds full of rain and wind. This will last a few minutes and then all is normal. The second squall we receive during the morning. In this squall there was more rain in it. The boat was cleaned with sweet water the first time since we left the Cap Verde. During the night we could see the squall on the radar. This will give us the time to take the sail in in case the wind will increase. Today the cook will serve pork meat to lunch.

Der Atlantik ist kein Ententeich / The Atlantic is not a duck pool

Der Atlantik ist kein Ententeich. Das mussten wir am 20.01. erfahren. Wir hatten Winde aus Nordost von 20 Knoten, in den Böen 25 Knoten. Da hatte sich ein ungünstige Dünung aufgebaut. In Perioden kam dann eine ca. 3 Meter Hohe Welle angerauscht, die uns dann stark versetzte und das Schiff aufschaukelte. Wir machten aber gut strecke. Es war nur sehr unkomfortabel. Elke hat gemeckert. An Schlafen war bei dem gerumpel und gegurgel nicht zu denken. Entsprechen war die Laune der Crew nicht die Beste. Wir konnten aber eine Strecke von 147 SM als Etmal für 24 Stunden eintragen. Das Wetter hat sich beruhigt, seit gestern scheint die Sonne. Wir konnten Angeln und haben 2 ordentliche Doraden angelanded. Wir haben über den Tag noch 2 neue Schlösser in die Tür zur Heckkabiene eingebaut, sollen ja viele Langfinger in der Karibik ihr Unwesen treiben. Elke hat ihren Schlafplatz in der letzten Nacht in den Salon verlegt, weniger Geräusche und weniger Bewegungen als Achtern. Jetzt geht es wetter bedingt etwas ruhiger zu, wir kommen aber immer noch gut vorwärz. Wir liegen noch im Zeitplan die Strecke von den Kapverden nach Barbados in 16 Tagen zu schaffen.

The Atlantic is not a duck pool. This we know since 20.01. We had Wind from north east of 20 knots and in the peak 25 knots. The waves where high and not comfortable. Periodically a 3 meter wave cam from behind and pushed the boat out of its way and the boat was bouncing around a lot. Elke was not amused. To sleep under this conditions was basically not possible with the sound of the boat, wind and sea. The spirit of the crew was not so good after this night. We could log a distance of 147 SM in 245 hours. The weather now has eased up and since yesterday the sun is shining. We had luck withz the fishing and could land 2 respectable Dorade on Bord. We alsdo have installed 2 more locks in the door of the after cabin, there are many long fingers in the Carib. Elkje has changed her sleeping place from the after cabin to the salon, ist less noise and lesser movement there. Now agfter the weather changed to better we make good way to Barbados. We are a still in our calculated range to make it to Barbados in 16 days.

Nach der Leichtwindperiode haben wir seit Gestern Nacht bessere Wind aus Nordost. Heute waren es 5 BF und das hat uns einen guten Schritt weiter gebracht. La Paloma ist mit 7 Knoten in Richtung Barbados unterwegs. Das macht dem Skipper und der Crew Spas. Die günstigen Winde sollen wohl noch weiter anhalten. Nur die Sonne will nicht so richtig durchkommen. Das ist nicht gut für unseren Stromhaushalt. Gestern mussten wir für eine Stunde den Motor starten um die Batterien zu laden. Jetzt fehlt uns der Generator, der leider noch immer defekt ist. Aber so lange wir um die 6 Knoten segeln bringt der Wellengenerator genügend Strom.

After the light wind conditions we receive since yesterday night good wind from the north east. Today we had BF 5 and this had brought us a good distance forward to Barbados. La Paloma was running with 7 knots in the right direction. This makes the Skipper and the crew happy. The favorable wind should hold on for some time. Only the sun do not like to come out, heavy clouds overcast the sky. Thisa is not good for our electric charging system. Yesterday we had to start the engine for one hour to boost the batteries. Now we are missing our generator, he is still not operating. As long we are sailing 6 knots trhe shaft generator is giving us sufficient electricity

Eine neuer Tag / a new day

In der letzten Nacht sind wir gut voran gekommen. Im Schnitt segelten wir um die 6 Knoten pro Stunde. Heute morgen wurde der Wind wieder launisch und lies in der Stärke nach. Trotz alle dem werden wir ca. 120 SM in 24 Stunden zurückgelegt haben. Die Sonne hat sich leider nicht sehen lassen, der Himmel ist bewölkt. Wir mussten einen mehr westlichen Kurs segeln was uns 5 SM von unserer Kurslinie versetzte. Der Wind hat vor einiger Zeit etwas AUF Südosten gedreht. Den Kurs haben wir dementsprechend geändert. Aber der Wind ist schwach und wir kommen nur langsam voran. Was soll's wir müssen halt auf besseren Wind warten. Laut den Wetterfrösche soll es ja morgen anständig aus Nordosten blasen. Schauen wir mal. Elke macht gerade das Mittagessen fertig, es gibt selbst gefangene Dorade mit Reis und Gurkensalat.

Last night we made good way to our destination. In average we sailed 6 knots per hour. Today morning the wind again became a bit difficult and eased up. Nevertheless we made 120 SM in the last 24 hours. The sun was almost not visible today, lots of clouds on the sky. We had to sail a bit more to the west and for that reason we where 5 SM off from our right line to Barbados. The wind is light and we are slow now. What is the matter, we have to wait for better wind. Tomorrow according to our weather frogs we should get lots of wind from north east. Wait and see. Elke is preparing the lunch for today. Frech Dorade with rice and cucumber salad.

Ein weiterer Tag auf See / a nother day at sea

Heute ist der 3 Tag auf See. Wir haben wir bisher 358 von 2000 SM haben wir hinter uns. Letzte Nacht hatten eine Weile eine andere Segeljacht in unserem Kielwasser. Die wollten nach Martinique, hatten so die gleiche Generalrichtung. Der Wind hat uns einen direkten Kurs nicht erlaubt. Auch drehte er immer wieder mal von Nordost auf Südost. Dadurch mussten wir den Kurs entsprechend ändern. Wir fuhren eine Schlangenlinie. Ab 5:00 bis 8:00 war der Wind eingeschlafen und wir mussten die 3 Stunden mit dem Motor fahren. Ab 08:00 UTC frischte der Wind aus Osten auf und wir konnten wieder die Segel setzen. Der Wind steht immer noch durch, Daumen drücken, dass es so bleibt. Was machen wir so den ganzen Tag, eine gute Frage. Heute haben wir dem Smut eine Vorrichtung für den Backofen gebaut. Der Smut beschwerte sich immer, dass die Backformen im Ofen hin und her rutschen. Mit einer Vorrichtung einstellbar auf die jeweilige Form einstellen. Heute gibt es Bratwurst, Kartoffelbrei und Sauerkraut. Da freut sich die Crew. Gerade hat der Wind wieder abrupt von Südost auch Nordost gedreht. Just now the wind changed again to north east

Today is the 3 day on sea. We have covered 358 of 2000 SM up to now. Last night we had a other sailing boat a little while behind us. This boat was on the move to Martinique, this is the smae general direction then us. The wind keep on changing and we could not steer the direct course to Barbados. The wind shifted from North East to South east. We have to alter the course several times. Wir have to sail zigzag. From 05:00 to 08:00 UTC the wind eased up completely and we have to run under motor. From 08:00 the wind came back from the east und we could set direkt course to our destination Barbados. Hope the wind will stay with us for some more time today. What do we do the whole day on the boat, a good question. Today we have constructed a devise for the oven. The cook always complained that the forms are shifting in the oven under sail. We constructed a devise which is adjustable now for al kind of forms, problem solved. Today the cook is serving Sausages German style, matched potatoes and Sauerkraut. The crew will be happy. Just now the wind changed again to north east. An we landed another Dorade.

Wenig Wind / no wind

Heute war das Segeln nicht so gut. Der Wind weg, dann drehend und mäßig. Wir machen 3-4 Knoten Fahrt. Außerdem ist es fast komplett bewölkt. Nicht genug Sonne zum Laden der Batterien, nicht genug Fahrt für den Windgenerator um Strom zu machen. Aber laut den Wetterfröschen soll es Morgen mehr Wind geben. Warten wir es ab. Ein loser Kontakt am Kühlschrank hat uns heute beschäftigt. Segel ausbaumen, Segel von Backbord nach Steuerbord. Dann Winddreher, Segel zurück auf Backbord. So hatten wir einiges zu tun. Jetzt ist der Wind schwach aber einigermaßen stabil. Das wird unser Etmal heute auf 120 SM schrumpfen lassen. Warten wir ab, was die Nacht bringen wird. Das Wasser hat die Farbe gewechselt und ist jetzt schön Blau. Wir sind jetzt im "Northern Equatoroal Stream" angekommen. Das heist jetzt Blauwassersegeln.

Today the sailing was not that good. The wind was turning around and very light. We sailing with 3-4 knots. The sky is very cloudy and the sun is rarely shining. So, not enough sun to charge the batteries, no speed enough for the shaft generator to generate power. According to the weather frogs tomorrow we should have more wind to sail. Let's wait and see. Today we had a loose contakt on the fridge compressor, took a while before we find it. Sail port side, sail stare board. We had something to do today. Now the wind is light but stable from the east. Our distance for the last 24 bhours will be only 120 SM. Let's see what the night will bring. The water change the color in to blue, we doing now blue water sailing. We are now in the northern Equatorial stream.

2te Nacht auf See / 2ond at sea

Am Nachmittag lies der Wind so langsam nach. Wir setzten das Besanstagsegel. Dazu mussten wir etwa 10° mehr nach Norden fahren um genügend Wind im Segel zu haben. Beim einstellen des Segels rutschte mir die Shoot aus der Hand und das Segel rauschte aus. Das musste erst einmal eingefangen werden. Dabei bemerkte ich, das an der Angel ein Fisch fast die gesamte Schur abgezogen hatte. Oliver hat mächtig gekurbelt, bis wir die Dorade an Bord hatten. Eine Mahlzeit morgen wieder gesichert. Der Wind war nicht so berauschend, in der Nacht hatten wir für eine Stunde flaute. Wenn wir so langsam segeln macht unser Wellengenerator keinen Strom. Um 06:00 mussten wir für eine Stunde den Motor laufen lassen, da die Batterien ziemlich runter waren.

In the afternoon the wind eased up. We hoist the mizzen stay sail. To get the wind in the sail we have to alter the course 10° more to north west. The line to adjust the sail run out of my hand and we had some stress to get it back in place. While doing so i observe that a fish was pulling almost all the line from the real. Oliver had lots to do to get the fish to the boat. Tomorrow the cook has a Dorade on the menu. One meal secured. If we sail that slow the shaft generator is not producing sufficient electricity to charge the batteries. At 06:00 UTC we had to start the engine to charge the batteries.

Unterwegs to Barbados / under way Barbados

Am 14. Januar sind wir von Mindelo aus in Richtung Barbados gestartet. Das sind ca. 2000 SM und dauert ca 16 Tage. Wir haben die ersten 24 Stunden hinter uns. Wind und Wetter sind OK. Leider eine Dorade verloren, Leine gerissen.

On 14. January we took off from Mindelo to Barbados. This are 2000 SM and will take us at least 16 days. Now we have the first 24 hours behind us. Weather and wind is OK. We lost a nice dolphin fish, line cut.

In Mindelo auf Ilha San Vicente / Mindelo on the island Vincente

Am Donnerstag sind wir in Mindelo auf der Insel Vicente angekommen. Es war eine schöne Überfahrt von 140 SM mit fast immer ausreichend Wind. Um Mitternacht waren wir im Windschatten der Insel Nicolao und wir mussten 1 Stunde Motoren. Danach kam der Passat wieder in der ursprünglichen Stärke zurück. Dann an der Südspitze von Vicente schwächte sich der Wind wieder ab, aber wir könnten bis zur Südwestecke der Insel segeln. Danach ging es 7 SM gegen den Nordostpassat bis zum Hafen nach Norden. Das war eine nasse und schaukelige Angelegenheit. Aber in 2 Stunden war alles überstanden und wir waren im Hafen von Mindelo. Hier haben wir in der Marina Mindelo festgemacht, der einzigen Marina auf den Kapverden. Hier wollen wir den Motor der Ankerwinde reparieren. Das ist in Arbeit, aber noch nicht fertig. Einen Rundgang durch Mindelo haben wir auch schon hinter uns. Morgen ist ein Ausflug über die Insel geplant. Schauen wir mal was die Insel zu bieten hat. M;it dem To-Stützpunktleiter haben wir uns auch schon getroffen und Erfahrungen ausgetauscht. 

On Thursday 10. January we arrived in Mindelo on the island of San Vicente. We had a smooth passage of 140 sm and most of the time nice wind. At midnight we where passing the southern part of the island Nicolao and the wind stopped abruptly. We had to motor for one hour to get out of the calm area. After that the wind came back in its old force.  On the south tip of the island Vicente the wind eased again. After that we had to turn north to reach the port of Mindelo. This was a wet drive of 7 sm to reach the port. In Mindelo we went in to the Marina Mindelo, which is the only marina in the whole Cap Verde archipelago. Her we will try to repair the motor from our anchor winch. A walk through the city we have made already. Tomorrow we will make a tour through the island. Also we meet the local officer of the Trans Ocean Club and exchange some experiences.

Unterwegs / under way

Der Flug mit dem Oliver gestern nach Boa Vista kommen sollte, konnte hier nicht landen und ist weiter nach Banjul, Gambia geflogen. Wir haben zwar eine Maschine landen sehen, da war er aber nicht dabei. Leider hatten wir keine Informationen was los war. Von einem französischen Boot bekam ich dann die Nachricht, der Flug konnte wetter bedingt nicht landen und ist jetzt in Banjul, Gambia auf dem afrikanischen Festland. Unsere Mutter rief an und fragte nach Oliver. Leider konnte ich ihr keine genaue Auskunft geben. Da machte sich die Oma richtige Sorgen und malte sich schon aus, das Flugzeug ist abgestürzt. Elke schlug die Angelenheit auch gleich auf den Magen. Um 10:00 dann der Anruf von Oliver. Entwarnung, alles in Ordnung. der Flug kommt morgen früh in Boa Vista an. Schnell die Mutter anrufen und Information weitergeben. Die Mutter sichtlich erleichtert. Am nächsten Morgen schwebte der Flieger dann in Boa Vista ein. Ich babe Oliver an der Pier eingesammelt und auf ging es zur La Paloma. Schlauchboot hoch, Sachen ausgepackt. Ein schnelles Frühstück und Anker auf und los. Jetzt sind wir auf der Fahrt nach Mindelo auf der Insel San Vincente, Kapwerden. Einen kleinen Fisch haben wir auch gefangen, den gibt es morgen zum Mittagesen. Wir werden dort morgen Nachmittag eintreffen. Unterwegs hatten wir 3 mal Besuch von Delfinen, die lustig um unser Boot schwammen. In der Nacht sah es aus wie Leuchttorpedos, wenn die Delfine um das Boot schwammen.

The flight of Oliver from Frankfurt to Boa Vista could not land due to weather conditions. The flight continued to Banjul in the Gambia. Unfortunately we had no information on that. One skipper, also waiting for some passenger from Frankfurt told me that the flight is in Banjul. My mother called and was worried that the plan made an accident and Oliver will be hurt. I could also not tell her what was wrong with the flight. Elke had also losts of concerns where Oliver is stranded. At 22:00 Oliver called from a hotel in Banjul, that the new ETA in Boa Vista will be around 07:00 next day in the morning. I informed my mother and eased up the tension. Next morning the plan arrived and I collected Oliver on the old fishing pier in Sal Rei. We went with the dinghy to La Paloma. Dinghy hoisted up the davits. Oliver unpacked his stuff and get a brake fast and up the anchor to sail to Mindelo, island of Vicente. A small Dolphin fish find our lure, so the lunch for next day was secured. Under way we had 3 times Dolpins to visit us. They played around the boat. In the night it was looking like illuminated torpedo's.

Heute Morgen sind wir von SAL, Palmeira nach Sal Rei auf Boa Vista gesegelt. Meine Ankerwinde hat den Geist aufgegeben und so müssen wir die Ankerkette von Hand aufholen. Das sind 25 Meter 10 mm Edelstahlkette und 30 Kg Anker. Das geht in die Arme. Hatten dann noch ein Kuddelmuddel mit dem Boot vor uns. Er hatte etwas nah bei uns geankert, was er aber nicht wahrhaben wollte. So lag unser Anker direkt unter seinem Boot. Da sind wir uns doch etwas nah gekommen. Unser Anker hat dann seine Kette noch aufgesammelt. Mit vereinten Kräften haben wir das dann entwustelt. Es war eine Rauschfahrt von knapp 40 SM. Wind war mal wieder genügend vorhanden. Wir waren früh schon um 14:00 an unserem Ziel, der Südbucht von Sal Rei. Hier gibt es einen schönen Sandstarnd. Leider war das Wasser trübe und wir konnten den Grund nicht sehen. Unser Anker hielt nicht gut, sodass wir 3 Ansätze brauchten bis das der Anker hielt. Alles von Hand, Anker runter und wieder rauf, das war Body-building erster Sahne. Jetzt wareten wir hier auf Oliver, der Morgen um ca. 16:00 hier aufschlägt.

This morning we sailed from SAL, Palmeira to Boa Vista, Sal Rei. Our anchor winch is not functioning and we have to hoist the anchor by hand. This are 25 meter 10 mm chain and the anchor with 30 kg. This is sport in the morning. We had a tangle of the anchor with a boat in front of us. This boat has anchored to closed to us, we told him this but he ignored that. Our anchor was directly under his boat. We had to join hands to clear the anchor. We had a fast sail to Boa Vista. At 14:00 our we arrived at the anchorage. It was the south's bay of Sal Rei. Nice sandy beaches, just the wrong time here it is still to cold. The water was not clear enough to see the bottom of the sea to find the right place to drop the anchor. We have to anchor 3 times before the anchor was set proper. All by hand, anchor down anchor up. This was body-building in the afternoon. Now we are waiting for Oliver,. he will be here around 16:00 tomorrow.

Wir ankern immer noch im Hafen von Palmeira. Hier wollen wir bis zum Montag bleiben und dann nach Boa Vista segeln. Etwa 40 SM sind es bis dort hin. Seit gestern hat die Dünung ein wenig nach Nordwesten gedreht. Es gibt ein kräftiges Tief im Atlantik, das hat uns den Seegang gebracht. Es rauscht eine Welle in die Hafen bucht und lässt uns schaukeln. Zum Glück ist der Wind beständig aus Nordost und so haben wir immer Druck auf dem Anker. Die Wellen brechen sich an der Hafenmauer und der Spray kommt zum Teil hoch darüber gespritzt. Elke hat gestern Nacht Ankerwache gehalten, sie kann bei solchen Bedingungen nicht schlafen, obwohl der Seegang und der Wind zum Abend nachgelassen haben. Heute ist es etwas besser und wir schaukeln nicht mehr so viel. Ich habe ein paar kleine Arbeiten am Schiff erledigt, die schon einige Zeit auf dem Zettel stehen. 

We are still in the port of Palmeira on anchor. We will be here up to Monday morning. Monday we will sail to Boa Vista 40 Miles south of this port. There we will wait for Oliver to come on Tuesday afternoon. Since yesterday the sea has shifted a bit to north west and now it rolls in to the port of Palmeira. We have a big depression in the Atlantic which sending us the waves. Luckily we have stable wind from the north east and we have permanent pressure on the anchor. The waves are clashing to the breaker wall of the port and from time to time the spray sprays high in the air. Elke has always problems to sleep in such nights and she was the whole night in the cockpit to do watch keeping. During the night the waves and the wind has eased up a bit. Today it is a bit better and we are not banging around so much. i have done some work on the boat witch has been on our to-do list for some time now.

Gutes Neues Jahr / happy new year

Wir wünschen allen unseren Lesern und Freunden ein gutes und erfolgreiches neues Jahr 2013.

Jetzt hat dass Jahr 2013 angefangen. Wir sind noch im Hafen von Palmeira. Vor einem Jahr konnten wir nur erahnen, dass wir den Jahreswechsel auf den Kapverden verbringen werden. Verbringen, wir haben buchstäblich den Jahreswechsel verschlafen. Nachdem wir eine Flasche Wein von der Insel kanarischen Hierro  geleert hatten, siegte die Bettschwere und wir hauten uns in die Koje.Der Schlaf gelang uns trotz der lauten Musik von Land her. Die Kapverder feierten ausgiebig bis in den Morgen hinein. Wir hatten wenigstens keinen schweren Kopf und waren ausgeschlafen. Ein kräftiges Frühstück und das Jahr konnte beginnen. 

Am 31.12. machten wir einen Landausflug. Wir hatten einen Kleinbus gemietet und fuhren unter Kenntnisreicher Führung von Karl-Heinz dem TO Stürtzpunktleiter über einen Teil der Insel. Eine kapverdische Familie mit Kindern und ein italienisches Ehepaar vom Nachbarboot waren auch an Bord. Eine bunte Truppe. Karl-Heinz, genannt Carlos, lebt seit über 20 Jahren hier auf SAL. Er ist der Stützpunktleiter des Trans Ocean Vereins und 72 Jahre alt. Er hat sehr gute Kenntnisse über die Verhältnisse im Sozioökonomischen Bereich der Insel. Engagiert sich auch selbst mit kleinen Hilfsprogrammen. Die Reise führte an eine kleine Bucht mit einem Einschnitt an dem Sichtbar war wie der Vulkan den ehemaligen Meeresboden vor 4 Millionen Jahren hoch gehoben hatte. Man fand noch Strukturen im Sandstein von Korallen und fand kleine Schnecken. Dann ging es weiter zum sogenannten Blauen Auge. Es ist ein Loch im Gestein an der Küste in dem das Wasser blau leuchtet wenn die Sonne dort hinein scheint. Leider steht die Sonne im Winter nicht hoch genug um uns den schönen Blick zu gewähren. Weiter ging es in die Hauptstadt zum kleinen Einkauf. Die Versorgung ist nicht besonders gut und die Preise sind hoch. Danach fuhren wir die Küste nach Süden in eine Saline. Diese Saline liegt in einer Caldera eines erkalteten Vulkans. Sie wird unterirdisch über die Kanäle der ehemaligen Lavaströme bei Springflut mit Meerwasser versorgt. Es kann gut sein, dass daher auch der Name SAL der Insel kommt. Es war früher eine bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor für die Insel. Für die Touristen wurde ein Becken zum Baden in der Sole hergerichtet. Uns war es schlicht zu kalt zum Baden. Danach genossen wir ein Mittagessen in einem kleinen Landrestaurant. Der Fisch war hervorragend und die Fritten die besten außerhalb Deutschlands in den letzten 6 Monaten.Dann ging es zurück nach Palmeira und an Bord von La Paloma. 

Inzwischen hat sich der verlorengegangene Fülladapter für die Gasflaschen wieder eingefunden. Jetzt können wir unsere Gasflaschen wieder mit Butan bei Shell befüllen lassen. Da braucht die Küche nicht kalt bleiben.  

Now the Year 2013 is there. We are still in the port of Palmeira. One Year ago we could not imagine to pas the new Year on the Island of SAL on the Cap Verde archipelago. We have overslept the change of the Year. After we have finished a bottle of wine from the island Hierro we was to tired to stay up to midnight. Off we went in to the bunk of La Paloma. The locals where playing music the whole night, but never the less we had a good sleep. At least we had no headache in the morning. A good German breakfast and the new Year can come.  

On 31.12. we took a tour of the island. We chartered a mini bus an drove around under the the guideance from Karl-Heinz, called here Carlos the German, he is 72 Years old. Carlos is since over 20 Years on the island and is the representant of the Trans Ccean Club here in SAL. Carlos has lots of knowlage of the socio-economic situation of the island. He engaged himself in small social projects. A cape verdian family with their children and a italian copple from a nabouring boa. a colorfull equipe. The trip out of Palmerira on the northern coast where we could see the buttom of the former ocean pushed up with the eruption of the volcano 4 Million Years ago. We found structures of corals and small shells in the sand stone. We continued to the so called blue ey, wich is a hole in the coast where the sun reflcts the blue water. Unfortunate we could not see this because of the winter sun is not elevated enough to shine in to the hole. We continued to the capital city of the island, Espargos for small shopping. The supply on the island is not very good and the prices are high. One the south west coast of the island is a crater of a old volcano. In the Caldera is are some salt pots for the production of sea salt. This was a important economical factor on the island before. It could de also that the name of the island came from this salinas.0For the tourists there is one basin for swimming and some kind of spa activities. After that we had lunch in a small local restaurant. The fish war excellent and the French fries the best outside Germany for the last 6 Months. Aftewr the lunch we went back on board of La Paloma to wait for the new Year. 

In the mean time the filling adapter for the Shell cooking gas bottles was found. So, now we can fill our empty gas bottles and there is no fear that the kitchen will be closed on La Paloma.
