Regentage in Teneriffa / Raining days on Tenerife

Die letzten zwei Tage haben wir ungewöhnliche Regenfälle hier auf den Inseln. Dem Land tut das bestimmt sehr gut, denn statistisch gibt es nur 10 Regentage im Oktober und November. Ein Funkfreund auf Lanzarote meldete 60 cm Wasser in seinem Bungalow in der Nähe von Arrecife. Das hat uns ein wenig ans Boot gefesselt, da Regenwandern nicht so unser Ding ist. Außerdem sind wir dabei unsere anstehende Reise nach Deutschland vorzubereiten, die am 7.11.2012 ansteht. Das Boot bleibt hier in der Marina Puerto Santa Cruz auf Teneriffa bis zu unserer Rückkehr liegen. Den Wassermacher müssen wir konservieren, einige andere Sachen sind noch zu machen. Der Transport zum Flughafen muss noch organisiert werden. Teneriffa hat ein sehr guten Busnetz und die Kosten halten sich in Grenzen. Vom Hafen zum Flughafen etwa 62 km kosten nur 9 EURO pro Person. Endlich haben wir mal Fotos von unserem Boot unter Segel bekommen. Bei der Ausfahrt von Gomera hat ein freundliches Boot ein paar Bilder gemacht. Jetzt scheint die Regenfront so langsam durch zu sein, wir sehen hie und da schon wieder blauen Himmel.

The last 2 days unexpected rainfall on the islands. Normally there are only 7 days of rain here on Tenerife Island for the whole year. The country is in bad need of rain that is clear. One of our friends from Lanzarote reported 60 cm of water in his house. This has kept us on board of the boat, because we are not enjoying rain walking. We have also to prepare our journey to Germany planned for the 7. November. The water maker has to be conserved and some other work has to be done. The transport to the airport has to be organised. The island has a good functioning bus system and this is not expensive. From the port to the Airport about 62 km the cost is only 9 Euro per person. Finally we got some picture of our boat under sails. A friendly boat has taken pictures while we are departed the harbour at Gomera a few days ago. Thanks a lot. The front of rain is nearly through and i can see some blue spots on the sky.

Überfahrt von Gomara nach Teneriffa / sailing to Teneriffe

Wir hatten eine schöne Zeit auf Gomera. Die Insel hat uns sehr gefallen und wir wären gern noch dort geblieben. Der Wetterbericht für die nächste Woche hat Starkwind mit über 30 Knoten aus Süd bis Südwest vorhergesagt. Wir hatten ja einen Liegeplatz in Santa Cruz de Teneriffa ab dem 01.11. gebucht. Aber wir wollten vermeiden in den Starkwing zu kommen. Aus diesem Grund sind wir schon heute los gesegelt. Um 06:00 ging es los, erst hatten wir keinen Wind, danach so um die 2-3 BF aus Süd. Bei der Gelegenheit habe ich mal unser neu entdecktes Basanstagsegel ausprobiert. Respekt, das hat uns doch um einen Knoten schneller gemacht. Das Segel lag 10 Jahre in der Backskiste und ich wusste nichts damit anzufangen. Schade, wir hätten es sicher schon früher mal genutzt. Der Tag war verregnet, immer wieder Schauer und Böen in der zweiten Tageshälfte. Die Entfernung von Gomera nach Santa Cruz betrug etwa 62 SM, davon konnten wir 45 SM segeln, der Rest musste unter Motor absolviert werden, da der Wind erst einschlief und dann auf die Nase blies. Um 18:30 waren wir dann im Hafen von Santa Cruz festgemacht. 

We had a good time on the island of Gomera. The island was nice and we would have stayed longer there if we not had booked already the port in Tenerife. The weather forecast for next week has indicated strong wind from the south with more than 30 knots of wind. We had already booked the place in the port from 01.11. on. We would avoid the strong wind next week. At 06:00 we dropped the lines and left the port in San Sebastian. First there was no wind, then after we had wind 2-3 BF from the south. We test the first time our Mizzen stay sail, witch was sitting in our locker unused for 10 years now.The sail was giving us one more knots to the speed. Respect, if we had known this before we would have used the sail more often. During the day we had several rain downpours as well as wind from different directions. The distance to cover was 62 nautical miles and we could sail 45 miles. The rest we had to use the motor because we had no wind. At 18:30 we tide the ropes at the Marina Santa Cruz.

Der zweite Tag der Inselrundfahrt / the second day ouf our tour of the island

Am zweiten Tag schauten wir uns den Westen und den restlichen Teil des Südens von Gomera an. Nachdem wir aus San Sebastian losgefahren sind und den Berg auf ca. 800 Meter erklungen haben, machten wir eine Pause und schauten und die kargen Täler an. Wir mussten aber feststellen, dass die Täler beim Waldbrand im August 2012 entwaldet wurden. Den Brandgeruch konnten wir noch wahrnehmen. Nach meiner Schätzung sind ca. 25% der Fläche im Westen und Süden der Insel abgebrannt. Im schönen Gran Valle del Rey im Westen der Insel hat es auch stark gebrannt. Das erklärt sicher auch warum die meisten Häuser einen neuen Anstrich hatte. Für Gomera ist das immer wieder eine Katastrophe wenn diese Waldbrände toben.

On the second day of our tour around the island we visited the western part and the rest of the southern part of the island. After we have left San Sebastian end climbed up the hill to about 800 Meters we took a break and looked in to the deep valleys, wondering why there are no trees left. We then discovered that all of the vegetation was burned in the fire during August 2012. The smell of the burned trees we could still recognise. To me estimate there are almost 25% of the the area in the western and southern part is burned down. In the beautyful valley "Gran Valle del Rey" almost all trees have been burned. Lots of houses has been newly painted after the burn. For Gomera is the fore always a disaster for the vegetation.

Erster Tag unserer Rundreise auf Gomera / First day of our tour on the island Gomera

Heute war der erste Tag der Rundreise auf Gomera, wir besuchten den Norden und Osten. Einstimmiges Urteil von uns allen, das ist bisher die schönste Insel die wir gesehen haben. In großen Teilen Grün bewachsen mit wirklich schönen Bergformationen. Der Terrassenbau für die Landwirtschaft war mal weit entwickelt. Durch die internationale Arbeitsteilung, die Landflucht der Jugend und dem Tourismus liegen große Teile brach und die Terrassen sind verfallen. Vieles wurde wieder aufgeforstet. Die Infrastruktur im Bereich öffentlicher und privater Gebäude ist auch hier in einem guten Zustand. Hier wird der sanfte Tourismus gefördert, was der Natur sicher gut tut.

Today was the first day of our tour on the island Gomera. We visited the north and east part. We are all four the opinion that this is the most pretty island we have seen so far of the canaries. Large part of the island if green and lots of trees are growing. Due to the land scape agriculture is only possible on the slopes of the hills. Large areas where build in small portions of terraces. The international division of labour, the fleeing of the people from the country side to the city as well as the tourisms has left the terraces empty and most of them are now destroyed. Lots of reforestation has been going on in the past years. The infrastructure for the public and private sector are in good condition. Also the soft tourism has been promoted, witch is good for the nature of the island.

Auf Gomera eingetroffen, kanarische Inseln / arrived at Gomera, Canary Island

Am 19.10. Mittags haben wir die Leinen in Pasito Blanco losgeworfen. Der Hafen wir schon sehr einsam gelegen. Da wurden Abends die Bürgersteige hochgeklappt. Es war eine rasante Fahrt. Wir hatten Wind bis zu 34 Knoten aus Nordost und eine 3 Meter Welle. das zweite Reff im Groß und die Genua auf 40% eingerollt. Der Besan war zu 100% oben. Trotzdem sind wir mit 7-8 Knoten in Richtung Teneriffa-Gomera gesegelt. Zwischendurch hat der Wind mal etwas nachgelassen, sodass wir die Genua wieder ausrollen konnten, das hielt aber nicht sehr lange an, dann mussten wir wieder einrollen. In der Abdeckung im Süden von Teneriffa war dann Schluss mit dem Wind und wir müssten wieder unter Motor laufen. Dann nachdem wir aus der Abdeckung von Teneriffa raus waren schlug die Düse wieder zu. Wind mit 30 Knoten und Welle 3 Meter und auch noch Strom von 1-1,5 Knoten gegen an. Da haben wir noch einmal einen auf den Hut bekommen. Leider sind wir wieder mal im dunklen angekommen, aber mit Radar und der Hafenbeleuchtung sind wir dann sicher in den Hafen eingelaufen. Es handelt sich bei dem Hafen um einen kommunalen Hafen und der ist dementsprechend Preiswert. Ganze 18,00 EURO zahlen wir hier pro Tag. Der Ort selbst ist mit 7000 Einwohner eher überschaubar, hat aber einige Restaurants und einen Supermarkt zu bieten. Montag oder Dienstag machen wir mal eine Rundfahrt auf der Insel, Soll sehr schön sein, warten wir es ab. 

On 19.10. Midday we have left the harbour Pasito Blanco on Canary Island with the destination Gomera. The port of Pasito Blanco was a bit far from everything. In the evening practically dead. We had a fast voyage to Gomera. Wind was up to 34 knots from north east and waves high as 3 meters. We had to lower the sails, the main in to the second reef and the genoa to 40%. Even with that we had speed of 7-8 knots in the peak  towards Gomera. In between the wind eased up a bit and we could un-reef the genoa but not for long. The wind was picking up again and we have the roll the genua back in again. On the south end of Teneriffe the wind was almost complete gone and we have to start the engine.  After we past the southern part of the island of Teneriffe the wind picked up immediately to force 6 BF 30 knots and we could hoist the sails once more. we got lots of action before we reached the port of La Gomera in the town of San Sebastian. Unfortunately we reached there in the full darkness and we have to use the radar to find the entrance of the port. The port is a communal port and the rates per night are reasonable 18,00EURO for our boat. The town is small and has 7000 inhabitants. Some restaurants and shops as well as a supermarket is available. Monday or Tuesday we will make a tour around the island. It seems to have a lovely land scape. Let's wait and see.

Auf Gran Canaria angekommen / arrived on Gran Canary Island

Mittags haben wir die Leinen im Hafen von Dran Tarajal losgeworfen. Unser nächstes Ziel Gena Canaria war nur 96 SM in Richtung West entfernt. Also rum um die Südspitze von Fuerteventura und direkt Kurs auf die Südküste von Gran Canaria. Anfänglich war der Wind noch ein wenig launisch und wechselte im Einfluss der Insel Fuerteventura die Richtung uns Stärke. Dann in der Düse angekommen legte der Wind aus Nordosten auf konstante 20 Knoten zu. Wir haben die Genua auf 50% gerefft uns sind trotzdem mit bis zu 7 KN unserem Ziel entgegen gerauscht. Einmal mustte ich einen Schlepper per Funk unterrichten uns nicht über den Haufen zu fahren. Da wir unter Segel unterwegs waren, hatten wir Vorfahrt. Davon mussten wir ihn erst einmal überzeugen. Knapp vor uns hat er den Kurs gewechselt um eine Kollision zu vermeiden. Unter Land an der Südküste von Gran Canaria schlief schlagartig der Wind ein und wir mussten die letzten paar Meilen unter Motor zurücklegen. Um 05:45 machten wir an der Tankstelle im Hafen von Pasito Blanco fest. Schlafen war angesagt, sind wir doch die ganze Nacht durchgesegelt. Außerdem ist zwischen den Inseln ein Verkehrstrennungsgebiet und dementsprechend Schiffsverkehr, sodass der Schlaf zu kurz kam. Wir haben uns immer noch nicht so richtig an den Tiedenhub von 2-3 Metern im Atlantik gewöhnt, sind halt Mittelmeersegler. Da haben wir glatt die Leinen zu kurz angebunden und es hat uns ein Lippklampe am Bug gekostet. Zum Glück ein sehr kleiner Schaden. Da muss ich eine neue kaufen und anbringen. Morgen fahren wir mal mit dem Auto über die Insel um einen ersten Eindruck zu bekommen. 

At Midday the lines from La Paloma has been loosen once more to leave the port of Gran Tarajal on Fuerteventura. Our next port of call was Pasito Blanco on Gran Canary Island with a distance of 96 SM. Round the south corner of the island of Fuerteventura and direct course to the new port of call. At the beginning the wind was changing the direction several time under the influence of the island. After we entered in the venturi between Fuerteventura and Gran Canary the wind picked up to a constant force of 20 knots. With a reef of 50% on the Genua La Paloma still runs up to 7 knots towards our next destination. Once we have to remind one ship to change course to avoid a collision, we had right an the other ship has to give us way, because we are under sail. This we had to make clear to him before he changed his course. Close to the land the wind suddenly died completely and we have to motor the rest to reach the port. At 05:45 we tide the boat in the port beside the fuel station. Now we had to take a good sleep, sleeping under way was not so good. We have sailed through a very bussy part with lots of ships crossing, so sleep was short during the night. We are still not very acquainted to the tidal water of 2-3 Meter difference, in the Med there is no significant tidal difference. e tide the boat a bit short and while the water was going down one of our clamp got broken. Not a big think, but is has to be repaired. Tomorrow we will make a tour with the car to see the island.         

Wieder ein Stück weiter nach Süden / A bit further south

Nachdem wir zwei Schöne Tage in der Bucht der Isla de Lobos verbracht haben, sind wir gestern weiter nach Süden gesegelt. Im Hafen von Rosario, der Hauptstadt von Fuerteventura haben wir in einer Bucht hinter dem Hafenbecken den Anker für die Nacht geworfen. Das Kreuzfahrschiff AIDAsol lag hier an der Mole im Hafen und hat seine Menschen über die Stadt ausgeschüttet. Abfahrt der AIDA war dann 18:00 in Richtung Norden. Der Ankerplatz hat uns nicht gefallen und aus diesem Grund segeln wir heute weiter nach Süden in den Hafen Gran Tarajal. Mal sehen wie es dort ausschaut. Bilder kommen später.

After two nice days at anchor in the bay of the Isla de Loboa we have been sailing to the south. In the port of Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura we dropped anchor behind the ports wall in a small bay. The Cruse ship AIDAsol had spit the whole tourist passengers in to the city. At 18:00 the AIDA sailed to the north. The anchorage is not very good, for that reason we will continue to the south in to the port Gran Tarajal. Let's see what will be there. Gestern sind wir von Lanzarote nach Fuerteventura gefahren. Im Nordosten liegt die Insel Isla de Lobos, was Seehunde bedeutet. Seehunde gibt es hier schon lange nicht mehr. Die Insel ist Naturschutzgebiet. Dadurch ist Bebauung verhindert worden. Es gibt eine schöne Lagune mit türkiesem Wasser. Wir sind hier vor Anker gegangen auf 6 Meter Wassertiefe über Sand. Tagsüber kommen Ausflugsboote mit Touristen in die Bucht. Nachts waren wir nur mit noch einsam anderen Boot vor Anker. Absolute Stille, nur das rauschen der Brandung war zu hören

Yesterday we moved from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura. In the north east there is the Isla de Lobos, it means seals located. Seals are not any longer there. The island is a natural reserve. Through that buildings are not permitted on the island. There is a lagoon with blue water. We have dropped the anchor at 6 meter water over sand. During the day there are lots of boats with tourists here, all of them leaving in the evening. During the night we where only two boats on anchor here. Total silent only the waves on the beach make there lovely noise.

Nach einer Woche auf Lanzarote zieht es uns wieder weiter auf die nächste insel, Fuerteventura. Diese Insel ist sehr unterschiedlich von Lanzarote, obwohl nur 10 km von einander entfernt. Viel Sand und die Berge sind nicht so hoch wie auf Lanzarote. Wir liegen zur Zeit vor der Isla de Lobos im Nordosten der Insel auf türkiesem Wasser, da kommt Karibik feeling auf. Gestern Abend konnten wir ein paar Schildkröten neben dem Boot schwimmen sehen.

After one week on Lazarote we continuing to the next island, Fuerteventura. This island is different from Lanzarote despite a short distance of 10 km from each other. Lots of sandy beaches and no high mountains. We have dropped the anchor in a bay of the island de lobos on clear water over Sand. This is Caribbean feeling. Yesterday at sunset we could see turtles swimming close to the boat.

Die Zeit der Hafenliegeplätze ist erst einmal vorbei. Erstens geht das auf das Budget und zweitens ist Anker liegen einfach angenehmer. Meistens kein Krach und der Nachbar liegt nicht so dicht neben dran. Auch klappern bei den meisten Hafenliegern die Fallen an den Masten, wenn es windig ist. Das nervt ganz schön. Bin schon einige Male auf das Nachbarboot und habe die Fallen beruhigt. Jetzt liegen wir im Süden der Insel Lanzarote vor der Playa Blanca vor Anker. Wir hatten eine ruhige Nacht, nur wenn die Fähre von Fuerteventura kommt schaukelt es ein wenig. Schwimmer war ich gestern auch noch, dass Wasser hat ca. 24 Grad, was so gerade noch angenehm ist. Von unserem Ankerplatz können wir Fuerteventura sehen. Das wird unser nächstes Ziel sein.

The time to stay in the harbour is over. First it is one big post in our budget and second anchoring is more quiet. Most of the time there is noise and the neighbour is right by the beside us. Also on most of the boats in the marina the lines are banging on the mast if the wind is picking up. Many times I went on the boat beside us to quiet the line up. Now we are on anchor in the south of Lanzarote in from of the Playa Blanca. The night was quiet, only if the ferry from Fuerteventura arrived there is some bouncing. I went yesterday for a swim, the water has 24 C, just enough for me. From our anchor place we can see the island of Fuerteventura which is our next destination.

Wir haben uns entschieden am Samstag den 06.10. den Hafen zu verlassen und an der Südküste in einer Bucht  vor Anker zu gehen. Das Wetter sieht gut aus und wir sollten ruhiges Wasser in der Bucht haben. Heute war ein wenig Arbeit angesagt. Erst einmal habe ich die Funkantenne verlegt, damit wir den Besanbaum weiter schwenken können. Das Motoröl kontrolliert, das Getriebeöl aufgefüllt. Eine Dieselleitung abgedichtet. Bei  den Ausstellbümen für die Genua die Bolzen gefettet. So ist immer was zu tun an Bord.

We have decided to leave the Port on Saturday the 6.10 and drop the anchor in one bay at the south coast of Lanzarote. The weather seems to be calm the next days. Today we had an working day. First the antenna for the radio has to be replaced. This permit us to shift the boom for the mizzen a bit more. engine oil and Water controlled.The oil level of the gear box topped up. One leaking diesel line repaired. the pin of the genua booms greased. It is always something to do on the boat.

Zweiter Tag der Inselrundfahrt / second day of our tour on the island

Heute war der zweite Tag der Inselrundfahrt. Es gab nicht mehr so spektakuläre Dinge zu sehen wie am ersten Tag. Der Nordosten der Insel hat mehr Vegetation als der Süden und Westen der Insel. Hier mal ein Bild von der gesamten Route die wir gefahren sind. Am Samstag werden wir den hafen Calero verlassen und einen Ankerplatz an der Südküste aufsuchen. Today the second day of our tour on the island. We have not seen so dramatic sceneries than yesterday. The North-East of the island has more vegetation than the west and south of the island. Der erste Tag der Indselrundfahrt auf Lanzarote / the first day of the tour of the island Lanzarote

Heute haben wir den südlichen Teil der Insel erkundet. Mit dem Auto sind wir auf der Südseite der Insel gefahren. Im Süden haben wir uns mögliche Ankerplätze angeschaut. Danach ging es an der Westküste lang und in den Nationalpark Timafaya. Das ist ein großes Gebiet in dem vor ca. 300 Jahen starke Vulkanausbrüche stattgefunden haben. Die Landschaft sieht aus wie eine Mondlandschaft. Auch nach 300 Jahren nur spärliche Vegetation. Auf dem Gipfel kommen noch immer heiße Gase aus dem Schlund. Ein Schlund dient einem Restaurant als Grill. Danach ging es auf der Suche nach dem Weinanbaugebiet und einer Bodega um den Weinvorart im Boot wieder aufzufüllen.

Today we have explored the south east part of the island. With the car we travelled to the south coast to explore potential anchoring places. After that we continued on the west coast and to the Timanfaya national park. This is an area wehre 300 years ago lots of volcanic activities took place. The landscape looks like on the moon. Even after 300 years there has only marginal vegetation returned. On top of the hill still hot air is blowing out of the ground. One of this chimney is used  as a barbecue for the restaurant. After that we have a view on the wineries on the island and we could buy some wine to carry to the boat.

Auf Lanzarote angekommen / Arrival on Lanzarote

Abfahrt von Madeira um 11:00 Ortszeit am 29.09.2012. Insgesamt 5 Boote sind auf den Treck nach Lanzarote gegangen. Zu unserer Überraschung hat der Wind gehalten was er versprochen hast. Wir konnten die gesamte Strecke Segeln. Zudem war der Wind auch noch recht konstant. La Paloma ist nur so nach dahin gestürmt. Nach 55 Stunden, am Montag um 18:00 haben wir im Hafen Puerto Calero an der Südostküste von Lanzarote festgemacht. Kurz vor der Ankunft haben wir dann auch noch einen Bonito gefangen, so ist mal wieder etwas fischiges im Tiefkühler. Morgen gibt es mal wieder Sushi von Elke hergerichtet.

Departure from Madeira at 11:00 local time on 29.09.2012. At total of 5 boats left at the same time the marina. To our surprise the wind keeps his promises to blow constant in the right direction. We could sail the whole distance. also the wind was nearly constant the whole trip. La Paloma was speeding towards Lanzarote. After 55 hoursd sailing we reached the port Puerto Calero at the south east coast of Lanzarote. Not far fromthe port we could catch a 5 kg Bonito for the kitchen. Tomorrow Elke will make a sushi out of it.
